LOL – I swear to God some people are their own worst enemies.  We get a lot of comments here on Lizardwebs – not necessarily from customers, but from general visitors – and spambots.  If you have a well-ranked site, then you probably know what I”m talking about.  My site uses Akismet for general spam blocking/removal and it clears “spam” every 30 days.  Right now I’ve got 74 sitting in spam, 10 in Trash that just didn’t pass muster and a decent amount that have been approved over the years.  Of the 74 in spam, those were apparently so blatant in their advertising purpose that they got caught.

On the other hand, of the 10 that I’ve got in Trash, I love the ones that are so disingenuous as to be laughable.  “Do you have a contact page?  I”m having a problem finding it. But hey check out my site at http://…”  Really?  The word “Contact” at the top in the menu doesn’t tip you off? Being in a normal place and labeled pretty obviously?  Now I realize that these are almost ALL from spambots so they can be only so intelligent and generic enough to be applicable across hundreds or thousands of websites. And truthfully, there probably ARE a bunch of sites that don’t have obvious contact pages – at which point, that kind of come-on would actually be applicable – and might work!

Then there’s the select few that figure by insulting your site or you personally, that you will approve their spam message.  Of course, again, it IS automated, but who in the heck comes up with these sure-fire “I know that THIS will get approved” ideas??  Someone has to write this stuff to begin with.  No, my site does NOT break on XYZ browser – I know for SURE, it doesn’t.  No, you haven’t seen this theme everywhere – well actually my current one, you MAY have seen a few times, but the last time I got that comment, it was a 100% handrolled theme. WHO thinks that insulting the website is a good idea when you’re trying to get a link back to your site published?

Then you notice the inevitable bad spinning on the comment…  Instead of the “Your site looks bad with XYZ browser…”, you see the line, “Your own place sees poorly in..” – and you know you’ve got some autospin stuff.  Spun or unspun,  insults or complaints don’t generate a whole lot of “Must approve this comment” enthusiasm on my part.

My two cents is – if it actually adds something to the site – even IF it is from a spammer, I’m happy to let it fly.  Most of them read though like they were put together by someone throwing Scrabble tiles down and pushing them into a line.  Word to the real people that visit here and read before posting – if you’ve got something viable and useful (even if it IS TRULY a complaint about the site or something), feel free to comment and it may get approved. If you’re spamming me, do a good spin at least.

ADDENDUM – 5/22/2013:  Here is another “let me insult their work and hope to get published” type comment. Obviously the URL will be left off.

Hi, Neat post. There is a problem with your web site in web explorer, may check this?

IE nonetheless is the marketplace chief and a large component to other people will pass over your wonderful writing due to this problem.
